Difference between Rummy and Spades Card Games

Spread the love

Both rummy card games and spades card games are popular and full of fun. Both of these card games can provide entertainment when played with a group of people.

Rummy vs Spades Card Games: Difference between Two

Rummy vs Spades card games – here’s the difference between the two

  1. The Rummy card game is skill-based, while the Spade card game is more dependent on luck.

2. The number of players in a Rummy game is between 3-6, while the number of       players in a game of Spades is four, formed in two partnerships.

3. In a Rummy card game, the number of cards dealt with is 1-2 decks depending upon the number of players in a game.  Only one deck of cards is used in a Spade card game.

4. In a Rummy card game, the ranking of cards from highest to lowest begins with Ace, followed by the King, Queen, Joker, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2.  The ranking from highest to lowest begins from Ace through 2 in a Spades card game.

5. In Spades, the suits are also ranked, where spades are the trump suit. The suits are ranked from low to high, beginning with club, diamond, heart, and spade. When a partnership bid wins in a Spades card game, the players get 10 points.

The suits are not ranked in Rummy, but the face cards and the aces win the players 10 points each. The joker is worth zero points in a Rummy card game.

6. In Indian Rummy, the joker card can be a game-changer. There are two types of jokers in Rummy- Printed joker (available in a deck of cards) and the Wild joker (a random card, decided at the beginning of the game). Jokers can be used to replace missing cards in a Rummy card game. Jokers decrease the overall penalty score since the card is worth zero points.

Jokers are usually not used in Spades card games, but a few versions played in different countries sometimes use one or two jokers.

7. The main objective in Rummy is to arrange all 13 cards of each player into sequences and sets. The player who arranges all his cards first wins.

The objective in a game of Spades is to win a total of 500 points. Points are won when a partnership wins the least number of bids. Points are lost when the partnership fails to win the trick because of placing too many bids.

8. There is no bidding in a Rummy card game. Each works on creating required combinations with the 13 cards that they have. Guessing the number of tricks you can take is what bidding is all about in a Spade card game.

The game begins with each player assuming the number of schemes they will take in each round. The total guesses are added up to make a positive score. A player can bid between the numbers 0 to 13.

9. After the cards are dealt with by each player in Rummy, the remaining cards, the open and closed piles, are kept at the centre of the table. These cards are then used to draw and discard cards later in the game. Jokers can be discarded but not picked from the open pile.

The player declares his hand once the 14th card is discarded in the finish slot. If the declaration is valid, the player wins the game. His points are awarded to the losing player depending upon the number of cards he has then.

After bidding in a game of Spades, the player to the dealer’s left begins by playing a card from the suit. He cannot use the joker. Then cards or tricks of each player are revealed one by one. The card told should belong to the very first suit played.

A card of the Spade is higher than all other cards but not to a higher Spade card. The winner of each trick then qualifies to the next round in the game.

Both Rummy and Spade are fun games and can be played for entertainment. The differences between Rummy vs Spade card games can help you choose which one is better suited for you and which one you will enjoy more.
